As always, we live in interesting times. The boundaries between the physical world and the cyber world have begun to blur. How the law deals with things digital affects us all.

Training IT professionals

I helped to write the ISEB Certificate in IT Law Essentials course in 2006 and was involed until it ended

e-wills (digital wills)

I am aware of a few cases in relation to digital wills, details here

e-signatures

We all use electronic signatures today (perhaps the first electronic signatures were PINs with ATMs), and I represented Mr Job in his case against Halifax PLC. The trial took place on 30 April 2009, and judgment was given on 4 June 2009 and published in the 2009 issue of the Digital Evidence and Electronic Signature Law Review. For further information, go to the PIN e-signature part of my web site.

e-notaries

The National Notary Association of the United States of America has published a new Model Notary Act (1 January 2010). I was invited to contribute to this by offering my comments and suggestions, particularly in relation to  electronic signatures and electronic evidence when the Model Act began to be revised in 2007.

Events

International conference on digital evidence
The Vintners’ Hall, London 26 and 27 June 2008

Symposia on digital evidence (speaker and joint organizer), the first one at the University of Rijeka, Faculty of Law on 12 April 2008. His Honour Judge Ranko Marijan of the Supreme Court of the Republic of Croatia opened and attended the symposium. The second symposium was held at Vukovar, 11-12 September 2008, where Ante Zeljko, President of the County Court in Vukovar spoke before the symposium began.

EU Projects

I have been involved with three EU projects, the Admissibility of electronic evidence in court (AEEC) project (now finished), and the first European Certificate on Cybercrime and Electronic Evidence (ECCE). A new project, a free e-Newsletter dealing with the topic of cybercrime began in 2009, but has, sadly, ceased. I was the editor responsible for Jurisprudence and Events. The eNewsletters that were published between July and December 2009 were available as free downloads from the ENAC web site, but this web site is no longer live. You can download the separate newsletters below.

Pod casts

I discussed digital evidence in a pod cast (number 70) with Mike Semple Piggot, author of the Charon QC Blawg in July 2008, and a further pod cast (number 73) on electronic signatures.
