As always, we live in interesting times. The boundaries between the physical world and the cyber world have begun to blur. How the law deals with things digital affects us all, although the vast majority of lawyers across the world have yet to understand they have to become familiar with the topic. This section aims to provide a little basic information into some aspects of the cyber world that I am familiar with.

Digital evidence

Evidence in digital format affects us all - whenever we use a mobile telephone, computer, satellite navigation system, buy anything from a shop with an RFID tag on it - the list is almost endless, we leave a footprint. Some examples of how people were caught this way are included in the preface to my 2007 book. It is a free download.

e-Wills

I am aware of a few cases in relation to e-wills, details here

Events

International conference on digital evidence
The Vintners’ Hall, London 26 and 27 June 2008

Symposia on digital evidence (speaker and joint organizer), the first one at the University of Rijeka, Faculty of Law on 12 April 2008. His Honour Judge Ranko Marijan of the Supreme Court of the Republic of Croatia opened and attended the symposium. The programme is available. The second symposium was held at Vukovar, 11-12 September 2008, where Ante Zeljko, President of the County Court in Vukovar spoke before the symposium began. The programme is available.

EU Projects

I have been involved with three EU projects, the admissibility of electronic evidence in court (AEEC) project (now finished), and the first European Certificate on Cybercrime and Electronic Evidence (ECCE). A new project, a free e-Newsletter dealing with the topic of cybercrime began in 2009, but has, sadly, ceased. I was the editor responsible for Jurisprudence and Events. The eNewsletters that were published between July and November 2009 are available as free downloads from the ENAC web site. The last eNewsletter was December 2009.

Pod casts

I discussed digital evidence in a pod cast (number 70) with Mike Semple Piggot, author of the Charon QC Blawg in July 2008, and a further pod cast (number 73) on electronic signatures.
